New Mama Deck
Support new mama's mental health and well-being.
Becoming a mom is one of the most beautiful things any woman experiences. You watch a brand-new life come into your world.
As a new mother, you feel full of possibility. You hang on every sound your new baby makes as you stare at this little miracle that is yours. You may, too, feel overwhelmed, stressed and exhausted. Many women are afraid or embarrassed to admit to these feelings. Social media often portrays new moms in unrealistic terms.
After bringing baby home from the hospital and life returns to a “new normal,” you can very often feel a shift in your energy. There is little time left for you in between changing diapers, feedings, laundry, and tummy time. One important question new moms often ask themselves is "Where did the ME time go?" And how do I meet and juggle all these new demands on my time? This is especially true for first time moms.
Being a first time mom is challenging. Routines are different from life prior to baby. These challenges might include accepting that household tasks may be more difficult to accomplish. Remember, your life goes from taking care of yourself to taking care of a newborn and yourself. The demands are completely different. Toss in sleepless nights, dirty diapers, spit up milk after an outfit change, and the to-do list is exhausting. The last thing you want from anyone is unsolicited advice about how to manage it all.
No, thank you. “I got this,” you think to yourself. And you do! But a few tips and tricks wouldn't hurt, either. Neither would getting a little help. It provides ways to have others pitch in help without someone asking you what you need. Just offer them the deck (you can preselect the cards that pertain to you) and take a pressure off yourself. And, here's a fantastic idea: Go through the deck with your partner to open the discussion about your new roles as parents, allocation of time, and tasks you can share.
Being a new mom takes time and patience with yourself.
Once you settle into your routine and the groove of this new mama role, you might notice that something is lacking. What’s lacking, for many new mothers, is personal time and space. The days blur together, and the nights feel eternal. It might be hard to feel like yourself again when time you once took for granted is no longer yours. These feelings can be hard to process. And while you’re filled with joy about the arrival of your newborn, it’s also true that you are, most likely, exhausted.
The New Mama Deck is a "Women's Circle" in a Box
Think of the New Mama Deck as a "Women's Circle" in a box. It is designed by women who've set an intention to support one another through this critical change and transition period. New Mama Deck encourages women to ask for help. This help is good for a new mom's mental and physical health.
Caring Advice for New Moms
New Mama Deck is specifically designed to be easy – NOT overwhelming. It’s not a book you have to read, or another thing on your long list of chores. It’s a collection of crowd-sourced new mom tips and tricks that you won’t have to learn on your own. And, most importantly, the prompts are focused on getting you the support you need.
To use, (you may want to presort the deck into those things that will be personally uplifting like pouring yourself a cup of tea) and those that you can outsource to others. When someone asks how they can help, offer them the cards you've preselected with easy to accomplish chores or tasks that will help smooth out your day. Many times friends and relatives want to help, they just don't know what kind of help to offer.
For yourself, you can shuffle the remaining cards in the New Mama Deck, pull a card from the deck from the boxed prompts, and find a nurturing recommendation. It's that simple! We suggest pulling a card 3-4 times a week to carve out even just twenty minutes that lift you up and help you take a deep breath.
A Great Gift for New Moms, New Parents, New Dads
New Mama Decks are a perfect addition to include with a baby shower gift or send to a new mom once her baby arrives. The decks remind a new mom to take time to care for herself so that her energy and stamina stay high (a relative concept).
New Mama Decks also remind a new mom to ask for help in ways that make a difference. This includes asking for help from family, friends, a spouse, or anyone else who can offer support. Prompts also remind mom that it's important to focus on her wellbeing.
Remember, being a mom is hard! Every single day is an accomplishment.
